Delhi High Court grants Umar Khalid three-day Interim Bail for mother’s surgery

The Delhi High Court has granted activist and former JNU student leader Umar Khalid a three-day interim bail in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The temporary relief was granted on humanitarian grounds to allow him to be with his mother during her medical treatment and surgery.
According to reports, the court permitted Khalid’s release from June 1 to June 3 and imposed strict conditions during the bail period.
He has reportedly been instructed to remain within the National Capital Region (NCR), stay at his residence, and travel only for purposes related to his mother’s treatment.
The court also required him to furnish a personal bond as part of the conditions attached to the relief.
The High Court’s decision came after a trial court had earlier rejected Khalid’s request for interim bail.
Khalid had initially sought temporary relief citing his mother’s health condition and family-related circumstances. The High Court later took an empathetic view and approved limited relief considering the medical situation.
Umar Khalid has been in custody since September 2020 in connection with the alleged larger conspiracy behind the northeast Delhi riots.
The case continues to remain under legal scrutiny and public attention due to its significance and the charges involved.
