Chandigarh building collapse death toll rises to two; investigation underway

The death toll in the Chandigarh building collapse has risen to two after rescue teams recovered another body from the debris of a two-storey structure that collapsed in the city's Industrial Area Phase II. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, triggering a massive rescue operation involving the police, fire department, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other emergency agencies.
According to officials, five people were also injured in the collapse and were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Rescue teams worked through the night using heavy machinery and specialised equipment to search for anyone trapped under the rubble.
Authorities later confirmed that the operation had been completed after all missing persons were accounted for. The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.
Officials have launched an investigation to determine whether structural defects, poor maintenance or other factors led to the collapse. The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of ageing buildings and the need for regular structural inspections. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken if any negligence is found during the inquiry.
