Assam Governor honours Kargil martyrs at State War Memorial
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya attended the Kargil Vijay Diwas commemoration at the State War Memorial in Dighalipukhuri on Saturday. The programme, organised by the Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Assam, marked India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War and honoured the valour and sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces.
Paying floral tributes to the fallen heroes, Governor Acharya stated that Kargil Vijay Diwas stands as a solemn reminder of the indomitable spirit, courage, and patriotism shown by the armed forces in protecting the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor urged the youth to draw inspiration from the lives of the soldiers and actively contribute towards nation-building with discipline and commitment.
During the event, Governor Acharya interacted with military veterans, serving defence personnel, and families of martyrs, expressing the country’s gratitude for their selfless service.
He felicitated family members of several bravehearts, including Honorary Flying Officer Thogiram Gogoi and Dulu Prabha Gogoi, parents of late Captain Jintu Gogoi, VrC; Thageswari Das, mother of Gunner Udhab Das; Bharati Saikia, wife of late Naik Someswar Saikia, SC; Hiranya Gogoi, mother of late Sepoy Rupom Gogoi, SC; and Dhal Kumari Shrestha, wife of late Havildar Padam Bahadur Shrestha.
The solemn ceremony was attended by senior officers of the Armed Forces, defence veterans, civil officials, NCC cadets, students, and members of the public. The Governor also commended the Directorate of Sainik Welfare for its initiatives in supporting ex-servicemen. The programme concluded with patriotic performances and a collective pledge to safeguard national unity and integrity.
