Amit Shah to be observer for WB Govt formation

The BJP has named Union Home Minister Amit Shah as its central observer for Government formation in West Bengal, signalling the party’s firm intent to assume power in the eastern state after a decisive electoral performance. West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya declared on Tuesday that the oath-taking ceremony for the new Government is likely to be held on May 9, which falls close to the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, Bengal’s iconic poet and Nobel laureate.
The choice of date is being viewed as a symbolic move to connect with the state’s rich cultural heritage while marking a new political chapter. Suvendu Adhikari, the firebrand BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the outgoing assembly, has emerged as the clear frontrunner for the chief ministership. Adhikari had quit Trinamool Congress in 2020 and has since built a formidable grassroots network across southern and central Bengal, is credited with steering the party’s aggressive campaign.
Party insiders describe him as a battle-hardened leader who understands the ground realities of the state and enjoys strong support among both organisational cadres and newly elected MLAs. His elevation, if confirmed, would represent a significant generational and ideological shift in Bengal politics.
The appointment of Amit Shah as observer underscores the BJP’s strategy of deploying its tallest leaders to oversee delicate post-poll manoeuvres in states where it has historically struggled. Shah, known for his organisational acumen and role in expanding the party’s footprint across India, is expected to hold meetings with newly elected legislators and senior state leaders in the coming days to ensure a smooth transition. The move also sends a clear message that the central leadership is closely monitoring developments in Kolkata and will leave nothing to chance.
In a parallel development, the BJP has appointed Union Minister and former party president JP Nadda as its central observer for the election of the legislative party leader in Assam. This decision comes amid the party’s efforts to consolidate its position in the North-eastern state following the assembly verdict. Nadda’s vast experience in party affairs is expected to facilitate a consensus-driven process among Assam MLAs.
Political observers say that these twin appointments reflect the BJP’s renewed focus on eastern and North-eastern India. With West Bengal and Assam holding strategic importance both politically and demographically, the party is keen to project stability and strong central backing as it prepares to take charge. The coming days will see hectic parleys in both states, as the saffron party moves swiftly to translate electoral gains into administrative authority.
The developments have triggered intense speculation in political circles, with allies and rivals alike watching closely how the BJP manages the delicate task of Government formation while balancing regional aspirations and national priorities.
