4-Year-old boy falls into 220ft deep borewell in Ambala, rescue operation underway

A 4-year-old boy fell into a 220-foot-deep open borewell in Haryana's Ambala district on Tuesday morning, triggering a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple agencies, including the Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police and the district administration.
The incident occurred around 7 am in Dhaneora (Dhanora) village when the child, identified as Nirbhay Singh, was accompanying his uncle and cousin to nearby agricultural fields. Officials said he accidentally slipped into the uncovered borewell, which had been dug for a tubewell. He is believed to be trapped nearly 220 feet below the surface.

Rescue teams rushed to the spot soon after the incident and began efforts to bring the child out safely. Specialised equipment, including cameras and oxygen support systems, has been deployed to monitor the boy's condition, while excavation work is underway to create a parallel shaft to reach him.
Ambala Deputy Commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar said all available resources have been mobilised to expedite the rescue operation. The Army has also joined the mission to assist emergency responders in the complex operation. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts to ensure the child's safe rescue.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of abandoned or uncovered borewells, which have been responsible for several tragic accidents involving children in the past. The rescue operation was still underway at the time of filing this report.
