Zero Tolerance Day to be observed twice a week

In its bid to prevent traffic violations, the Gurugram Traffic Police has decided to soon observe “Zero Tolerance Day” twice a week across the city. As of now, the department  observes Zero Tolerance Day two days in a month. Apart from challans, the police will also hold awareness talks on Zero Tolerance days in future.

“Our only aim to organise Zero Tolerance Day twice a week is to catch violators who break traffic rules across the city. Next on our agenda is to spread awareness messages among the offenders not to break traffic rules. Also, we have identified a number of dark spots on National Highway-48 and other parts in the city, as part of our goal to reduce fatalities on the road,” DCP (traffic), Sulochana Gajraj said.

Normally, the city police issue challans to about 3,000 vehicles on an average in the city. On Zero Tolerance Day, apart from traffic police, all police stations concerned also penalise violations in their jurisdiction.

The Gurugram traffic police and all police stations in its jurisdiction observed Zero Tolerance Day against traffic violations on June 7. The number of vehicles against which fines were issued was 12,632. The amount of money collected as penalty was Rs 13,86,700, the police said.

During the day a maximum number of challans are issued for driving without seatbelts and helmets, over speeding, wrong parking, signal jumping, triple riding and driving in the wrong direction.

Apart from drives to enforce road rules,  Gurugram Police officials are also planning to launch a special drive to check drink driving during the night, especially on the busy MG Road, Golf Course Road, Huda City Centre Road and state highways.

“The number of Zero Tolerance day will help to curb traffic violations effectively. It would have to be brought to enforce the laws. Speeding is the main cause of accidents. We need to carefully consider ways to effectively stop people breaking the limits,” the DCP, said.
