A woman committed suicide on Tuesday evening by jumping on a Metro track as the train was entering the station, police said. The incident was reported around 3.45 pm from Race Course Metro station. “The woman, who appeared to be in her 20s, jumped on the track from platform no. 2 of Race Course Metro station. She was hit by an oncoming train from Huda City Centre towards Jahangirpuri,” said a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official.

“The woman was rushed to RMl Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) Sanjay Bhatia. The woman was later identified as Murtaza, a resident of Najafgarh in South-West Delhi. “Murtaza, who was in her final year BA, was identified from a library card issued from West Delhi’s Kalindi College,” said the official.

“The reason behind the act is yet to be ascertained as no suicide note was recovered from the victim’s possession,” the official said. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which recently had decided to install platform screen doors, said all stations under Phase III will have suicide barriers to stop passengers falling or being pushed on the line. Platform screen doors are designed to open at the same time as carriage doors open. “A woman jumped in front of the train around 3.45 pm. She was taken out from the under frame of the train and sent to a hospital. This led to bunching of trains and delay of about 5-10 minutes,” said a Delhi Metro spokesperson.
