A 23-year-old second year MBBS student at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his hostel room on Tuesday afternoon.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Himanshu Katara, who hailed from Rajasthan, had reportedly been depressed for the past three days. A two-page suicide note mentioned some mental illness which led him to take such an extreme step.

Katara was in his 4th semester and had taken admission in 2011. “Around 11.30 am on Tuesday, some of his friends peeped into room 6 of hostel 3 from a ventilator and saw him hanging. They immediately raised an alarm,” said a senior police officer.

One of the hostellers made a PCR call and Katara’s room was forced open in the presence of police and AIIMS officials. “He was taken to AIIMS casualty, where he was declared dead on arrival,” the officer added. His parents have been informed.

Katara was known to be a good student and his friends found him friendly, cheerful and very social. He was always active and took part in various cultural and extra-curricular activities. His father, Suraj Mal Meena, is also a doctor.
