The Delhi Government's pollution watch body Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) is going to organise a workshop on Wednesday on the management of biomedical waste and how to segregate hospital waste into various categories.

According to DPCC officials, two persons from each of the hospitals with bed capacity of over100 have been invited to attend the workshop at India International Centre. The new set of rules on biomedical waste that came into force on March28, 2016 will also be illustrated to the participants from healthcare organisation.

These are the major contributors in terms of waste generation. Salient provisions of the rules are being deliberated in the workshop, which will pave an easy roadmap in implementing the rules.

Officials said all the Health Care facilities (HCFs) are also being asked to display the authorisation issued by the DPCC at a prominent place in the premises of HCF, so as to gain confidence of the patients as well as the attendants. "All persons who generate, or handle Biomedical Waste (BMW) in any form, including hospitals, animal houses, first aid rooms of schools, forensic laboratories and research labs, irrespective of their size/ number of patients/ the quantity of BMW generation, are liable to apply and obtain authorisation from DPCC," DPCC stated.

As per the DPCC guidelines for HCF, this shall ensure recovery of resource(s) followed by segregation of liquid chemical waste at source and ensure pre-treatment or neutralisation prior to mixing with other effluents generated from health care facilities. "The laboratory waste, microbiological waste, blood samples and blood bags shall be pre-treated through disinfection or sterilisation on-site in the manner as prescribed by WHO or NACO," the DPCC stated.

Further, HCFs shall ensure proper record keeping as per provisions and every occupier to segregate its waste in to various categories as per the Schedule-I of the rules.
