In order to empower the woman and children and teach them different techniques in martial arts and self-defence, the first winter camp on self-training techniques was organised at Dwarka. Special Commissioner of Police (law and order) inaugurated the event.
The Special Police Unit for Women And Children (SPUWAC) earlier known as Crime Women Cell was set up in 2009 to give a more sympathetic response to women and children complaints on priority basis.
During the self-defence training, the participants are also being trained how to make use of items like dupatta, pen and handbags to protect themselves from attacks by muggers. The training helps in building up the self-esteem of students/women so that they do not feel vulnerable and humiliated.
A total of 990 self-defence training programmes have been conducted and 1,20,243 participants have attended the event. This year, 143 programmes have been conducted and 15,643 participants were trained, including students from 54 schools and 11 colleges.
