A day after a 22-year-old woman was allegedly found murdered under mysterious circumstances at a guest house in Old Delhi’s Jama Masjid area on Saturday evening, the Delhi Police on Sunday said they have arrested the main accused, identified as Ajam.
Police said the incident came to light on Saturday evening at the Al-Danish guest house in Jama Masjid area when the guest house staff allegedly found foul smell emanating from one of the rooms. Upon opening up the room, the staff found a woman later identified to be Sonam in the washroom with a duppaataa around her neck.
A senior police official said the guest house staff found that Sonam had checked in with Ajam 2 pm and found the man leaving the guest house in a few hours. Police said based on the CCTV footage and the Identification Card details shown of Ajam, they tracked him down at Sonipat. Police said they apprehended Ajam and by Sunday afternoon, the police teams were in the process of bringing Ajam to Delhi.
Sources said Ajam and Sonam were allegedly in a relationship for the past few years. A senior police official said they are waiting for the accused to reach Delhi and once he is interrogated, only then they will be able to establish the exact motive behind the murder.
Sources further said Ajam had allegedly checked in at the guest house with Sonam on a false name. Police said apart from the duppaata tied around the victim’s neck, they did not find any serious injury marks on her body. Further investigation in the matter is still on.
