Upset over not being able to exchange "soiled notes in the denomination of Rs 10 and Rs 50" from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), a middle aged woman allegedly stripped in front of a massive crowd outside the RBI building in New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the senior police officer of the New Delhi district, the woman, who works as a domestic help, came to the bank with her 5-year-old child. She had been coming to the bank since past two days, hoping to exchange old notes of at least Rs 4000.
After the woman was told at the bank that the exchange of soiled notes was not acceptable until she provided her aadhar card details, she allegedly began creating a scene outside the bank building and claimed that she did not have the aadhar card and therefore was being harassed by the RBI.
In light of the ruckus she created, the local police was called in to calm her down. Two women constables even tried to take her inside the PCR van. But the woman resisted, shouted and cried till the constables let her go. later, before the public or police could stop her, she allegedly stripped as a mark of protest. Bystanders were shocked as she stripped off her kurta. Her child was standing beside her the whole time during the incident. The whole incident was recorded by a passerby following which the video went viral. Police said the woman had no identity card. The old notes that she was carrying were damaged and half eaten by rats.
"The woman stripped and demanded to meet RBI officials. She wanted to persuade them to exchange her old notes. She was covered up and taken to the bank officials, where they again informed her that her old notes cannot be exchanged anymore. Also, she had no identity card. The old notes she was carrying were soiled. It looked like rats had eaten parts of the notes," said a senior police officer.
