A woman lost her legs in a suicide attempt at the Janakpuri East Metro station on Friday. Both the legs of the 25-year-old had to be amputated after she jumped in front of an oncoming train.

Police said that the woman is critical. “She was rushed to  Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital. Her condition is serious. We are yet to ascertain the reason behind the extreme action,” said a police official.

"There was no delay in the Metro service due to the incident. The woman was shifted immediately from the station. Since it happened in a non-peak hour, the trains were running in  10-minute frequency," said an official with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

In an effort to prevent suicide attempts at the elevated Metro stations, DMRC has raised the height of platform railings.

About 90 Metro stations in the city are elevated.

DMRC covers 190-km length of tracks and 145 stations, including the Airport Metro line. Over 20 lakh commuters travel on Delhi Metro everyday.
