A 21-year-old woman was killed on the spot when a speeding truck hit her on Sohna-Palwal road. According to the police, the victim, Sunita a resident of Hajipur village had gone out to dispose garbage on the other side of the road around 7am on Saturday. When she was crossing the road, she was hit from behind and died on the spot. The driver of the vehicle, who has not been identified yet, managed to escape.

Traffic on the stretch came to a standstill for around five hours when villagers from Hajipur and its nearby villages blocked the road with the woman's body.

The protesters said they had informed the concerned authority about the dangerous spot on the stretch but despite repeated reminders and pleas to the authorities, speed-breakers were not  built on the stretch. They also alleged that several lives had been lost to accidents on the stretch before.

Soon after information about the accident a police team reached the spot and tried to clear the stretch but their effort went in vain as the protesters were demanding a strict action against the errant driver of the vehicle. They were however, persuaded by the police to go back to their homes. A police team has been put on the job to bring the culprit to the book, said a police official.

The road was cleared only after speed-breakers were built on both sides of the road and police assured the protesters that the accused would be arrested soon.

Around 9.40am, Birem Singh, Assistant Commissioner of police (Sohna), reached the spot and assured them that police would find the driver soon and a strict action will be initiated against him.

The villagers said the family was preparing for her wedding she was to be engaged on Sunday.

"An FIR has been registered on the complaint of victim's father Ramesh Kumar against the unidentified vehicle's driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Sohna Sadar police station. We are trying to identify the vehicle," said Ravinder Kumar, public relations officer (PRO) of Gurugram police.
