The family of the woman who was shot dead at a Metro station in East Delhi has been left numb with shock. They claimed that their daughter, Deepti, had been mentally and physically tortured by her husband Pawan and his family soon after the two married.
Deepti was accompanied by her father--Bishan Das, who was also shot by Pawan, on Thursday. Das is a retired Government employee.
The family members said Pawan and Deepti married on February 11, 2005 and it was an arranged marriage. Two daughters -- Jeeitka (6) and Khanak (1.5) were born out of the wedlock.
Swarn lata, Deepti’s mother, said her son-in-law and his family always kept nagging her for not bearing a male child. “In fact they even tried to kill her by setting her on fire and poisoning her with Sulfas earlier in 2012. She had to be hospitalized a couple of times due to the atrocities meted out to her by her in-laws,” she said.
She also alleged Pawan, who is into construction business, was a drunkard.
“His family also tried to burn her alive and wanted him to re-marry so that they could extract money. From last December, Deepti started staying with us at Chirag Delhi. For two years, a case of domestic violence was on and on court orders, a compromise was done,” she said adding that after the birth of second daughter, Pawan started torturing her more aggressively. Deepti was hiding all this from her parents for a long time but when Pawan tried to kill her daughters last year; she filed for divorce two months ago. “When I got married in 2012, my parents gave a car to my in-laws and seeing that Pawan started demanding `25 lakh from my parents,” said Nidhi, Deepti’s younger sister.
