Head constable Satish Chand, who has been lodged in Tihar Jail in a case of throwing a brick at a woman for allegedly being denied a bribe of Rs200, is under ‘suicide watch’ as he has gone into depression due to his dismissal from his job. Sources from Tihar told The Pioneer that Satish Chand has slipped into depression because of losing his job and dignity as he had served the force for 27 years without any complaints against him. He is also hurt by the fact that his account of the incident was not considered before he was dismissed from duty. Chand is lodged in jail no. 8 of the high-profile Tihar.

Source said Chand has been kept under ‘suicide watch’ and a jail warder has been specifically assigned to regularly check on Chand who has gone into depression. Even before being sent to Jail, Chand was seen crying at the police station where he was detained. Chand was summarily dismissed from duty after a woman alleged that he attacked her with a brick when she denied her a bribe of Rs200. Chand however claimed that only one side of the story was being highlighted by the media and his side was not even considered before he was dismissed and arrested.

The incident had occurred in Golf links area on May 11 following an altercation between a traffic head constable Satish Chand and Ramanjeet Kaur, a mother of three, over an incident of traffic rule violation. The incident was captured on camera and the video clip showed the woman picking up a brick and hurling it at the policeman’s bike while the constable was seen attacking her back with another brick.

Soon after the incident, Chand was initially suspended and then dismissed from service with immediate effect as the incident triggered widespread outrage. Chand was arrested after a criminal case was filed against him and later remanded in 14 days of judicial custody by a trial court. The woman had alleged in her complaint to the police that Chand demanded a bribe of Rs200 accusing her of violating traffic rules and when she insisted on being given a receipt, he abused her and hit her with a brick in front of her three minor children.
