Due to global climate effect, number of migratory birds in Okhla Bird Sanctuary has started to decline. Ornithologists on Tuesday said big fall has been recorded in the category of migratory birds from central Asia this year. Ecologists said no bird flu cases have been detected in the sanctuary so far.
It was understood that this year many migratory birds would visit the Okhla Bird Sanctuary due to enormous amount of rainfall that developed aquatic vegetation, said ecologists. But with the opposite happening, the bird watchers are deeply concerned.
TK Roy, Delhi-based ecologist, said this time only 200 birds have turned up. “The only reason for the bird watchers to visit the sanctuary could be the presence of Eurasian Coots,” said Roy.
He said Eurasian Wigeon, Flamingo and Greenish Warbler (Phylloscopus trochiloides) are not being seen.
Bird sanctuary hosts more than 300 different bird species.
The sanctuary is popular for hosting migratory birds like Greyleg Goose, Bar-headed goose, Ruddy Shelduck, Mallard, Spot-Billed Duck, Common Teal and resident birds like Common Kingfisher, little Stint, Grey Heron and little Egret.
