With rain lashing the national Capital on Friday, the month of February this year has turned out to be the windiest and wettest in a decade. Rain pushed the mercury down with the maximum temperature settling four degrees below normal at 21.3°C. The Met department has predicted more rains and thundershowers on Saturday.
After the dense fog month of January, this month witnessed relatively average fog conditions. However, there has been a higher duration of winds from the East which resulted in more rainy days. “February witnessed 13 days of winds which caused eight-10 days of cloudy or light rainfall days. last year, incidentally, though similar active systems had affected the city during the same month, number of stormy days was only five-six days. Interestingly, from 2005 to 2012 there were no rainy or cloudy days during February. Such conditions used to occur only for one-three days,” said RK Jenamani, director, Met department, IGI Airport.
The rain gauge measured a rainfall of 10 mm at Safdarjung, while that in IGI Airport was 17.2 mm. “There were two powerful thunderstorms which moved across Delhi. One was on Thursday night between 2.30 am-3.30 am. The second one occurred between 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm. The later one was very powerful as it entered to Delhi from South-West side and then covered entire Delhi. It later moved out across north-east of Delhi,” he added. The day temperature was registered at 21.3°C which was four notches below normal, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 12°C. Humidity was registered between 66 per cent to 100 per cent.
The weatherman has predicted partly cloudy sky on Saturday with one or two spells of very light rain/ thundershowers occurring in some areas. Shallow fog in the morning is also expected. Maximum and minimum temperature is expected to remain at 21°C and 13°C respectively.
