lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna on Wednesday vowed to build the National Capital as a 'city of dreams'. "The Government is determined to build the city of our dreams and welcomes initiatives that will help us.
The Government commits itself to ensuring a bright and productive future for the young, a caring future for the aged and a secure environment for all. The confidence in my Government reposed by the citizens of Delhi has inspired us to dream big. We are not inclined to accept that growth and development have to be based on small incremental steps," the l-G said in his 25-minute speech addressing the first day of the Budget Session of Delhi Assembly on Wednesday.
l-G further stated that it was the sustained evolution over the past 15 years that has helped the city become what it is today.
Khanna recounted various initiatives of the Government: From the plans to regularise unauthorised colonies and providing accommodation to slum-dwellers in the city to making Delhi a kerosene-free capital and giving beneficiaries of a number of schemes direct cash transfers.
Claiming that the city has witnessed "unprecedented" and "sweeping changes" in the last 15 years, he said the Government has aimed at making Delhi an "efficient, productive and caring city" in the 12th Plan period (2012-2017).
"An entire generation that takes the Metro, the low-floor buses, the 24-hour electricity supply and even the increased green cover that characterizes the Delhi life does not realise that these were non-existent 12 years ago. The fact is that these are results of major initiatives taken by the Government over the last 15 years," he said.
On the issue of unauthorised colonies, he said all efforts were being made to remove the obstacles for regularisation of all them.
"Delhi continues to contribute a healthy 3.8 per cent to the GDP at the national level. The per capita income of Delhi in 2012-13 is about three times the national average," he added.
He said a State Resident Data Hub has been set up with the support of the UIDAI authority to verify Aadhar numbers.
On providing shelter to slum-dwellers, the l-G said the Delhi State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation is constructing 40,000 residential flats for economically weaker section families. l-G stated that the construction of 13,820 flats has been completed and construction of another 25,500 flats is underway.
