A day after building collapse incident in Sadar Bazaar area, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Monday claimed that it has cracked down against nearly 4,000 unauthorised properties during the last one year.

Apart from demolishing 2,468 properties, the civic body has sealed 183 properties in six administrative zones. The action taken report (ATR) against illegal construction from April 1, 2013 to March 31 this year suggests that the Engineering Department officials booked 1,984 property owners for raising illegal constructions out of which demolition orders were passed against 1,131 properties. “So far the officials have demolished 735 booked properties while the demolition action against the remaining properties will be taken soon,” Mann said. The North Corporation has initiated prosecution against 48 property owners as illegal construction being raised by them posed risk to the public safety at large.

“In South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), 3069 illegal constructions were detected and prosecution was initiated against them. According to the data, 13 properties were fully razed while 652 were partly demolished and 260 were sealed,” SDMC spokesperson Mukesh Yadav said. Officials also booked 1,608 properties on the spot where unauthorised construction was going on. In East Delhi Corporation, 422 properties were booked for unauthorised construction out of which 155 structures were demolished completely. 26 properties were sealed, officials added.
