DCPCR conducts study on status of girls in Delhi’s slums

looking into the intricacies of child welfare, the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has conducted a detailed study on the status of adolescent girls in the slums of Delhi. While the commission has only focused on adolescent girls from slums, it has factored in the basic quality of life of these girls in terms of their education, family status and even parental behavior. This report of the DCPCR will be out by the end of the month which will also be sent to the municipal ward councillor and other departments working for protection of the girls.

A team of volunteers from DCPCR went to each district in Delhi and chose five slums from there. They picked a total of 55 slums and took 10 representatives from each slum. Arun Mathur, chairperson, DCPCR, said, “Once these girls were chosen, the team analysed their lifestyle. Do they workIJ Are they studyingIJ What is their family scenarioIJ Are they married of notIJ What is their parent’s response to their lifestyleIJ These were a few questions that they worked around.”

Once they got the basic information from almost 550 girls across the city, DCPCR members spoke to municipal ward councillor, Anganwadi Workers (AWW), NGOs in the area, gender resource departments and Women Development Cells (WDC) about these girls. They even looked into the various schemes available for the girls and why those schemes were not being availed.

“There was then a lot of discussion, debate and analysis on the issue. The members also brought in analysis in terms of religion. This study will help bring out the real issues so that they can be dealt with. It should be out in 10 days time after which it will be circulated in all districts. The report analyses the intricacies of the lifestyle of these adolescent girls and looks into how they are denied basic child rights,” explained Mathur.
