What's in a name? Everything, apparently

Two years since trifurcation, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) wants to retain the erstwhile name ‘Municipal Corporation of Delhi’. The civic body has proposed to change its name from North Delhi Municipal Corporation to ‘Municipal Corporation of Delhi (North)’.

The Corporation argues that the name ‘Municipal Corporation of Delhi’ or MCD was in vogue and a majority of people in Delhi could identify the civic body better with this name. A resolution to this effect has been passed by the House of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and the Municipal Commissioner has been directed to place the preamble before the Standing Committee of the Corporation for changing its name desirably.

“For the last seven decades, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has its own recognition and the trifurcated parts of the erstwhile MCD too are known by the same name among the public of Delhi. Changing the name of North Delhi Municipal Corporation to MCD (North) will have greater significance and it will also minimise confusion among people,” the resolution said. Sources said the other two civic bodies — East and South Delhi Municipal Corporations may also follow the suit if the North Delhi Corporation reverts to the old name.

The resolution also proposed to change the logo of the North Delhi Corporation to MCD (North) and put in efforts to make the same popular through advertisements. According to the resolution, moved by BJP councillors Bharat Bhushan Madan and Devender Solanki, said despite trifurcation and renaming of the civic bodies a number of roads and advertisement boards mention the name of MCD and in such circumstances it was necessary that the name of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation be changed to avoid confusion. It may be noted that the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi was trifurcated in March 2012. On getting the Centre’s nod, it was divided into three entities — Delhi Municipal Corporation and East Delhi Municipal Corporation respectively.
