Watches worth Rs9 cr stolen from CP showroom

Nearly 90 Rolex watches worth approximately Rs 9 crore were stolen under mysterious circumstances from a high-end showroom in New Delhi district's Connaught Place.

The theft took place on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday at Cooke and Kelvey showroom, said the official at Rolex retailer situated in Scindia House in Connaught Place.

"The incident was reported on Tuesday morning that around 90 Rolex watches worth around Rs9 crore were stolen from Cooke and Kelvey showroom in the night. It seems that a spade was inserted as a lever beneath the shutter of the showroom and it was lifted to provide entry to a child who carried out the robbery," said Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) SBS Tyagi.

Police have registered a case of theft at Barakhamba police station in this regard and investigations have been taken up. However, investigators are grappling with many loose ends in the case. One of which is that, that the security guard, who was sleeping outside the showroom did not get wind of the theft. He is being questioned by the police in this connection. "Interestingly, the showroom also has gold jewellery but it was not stolen. The thief only targeted Rolex watches, which were insured. Such a high-end showroom did not have CCTV camera installed on its premises," Tyagi added.

Police could get any CCTV footage from neighbouring buildings. However, fingerprints of a child have been lifted by the forensics team which along with other circumstantial evidence is being investigated.
