The Delhi Police Special Cell on Tuesday arrested a wanted highway robber from Kalindi Kunj area in Southeast Delhi. Police said the accused has identified as Sahun (38) of Bishambhara village of Mathura district.

According to police, the accused is wanted in more than 50 cases of dacoity and robbery on highways in many States. Officials said they were informed by the sources that the accused was going to Meerut to meet his friend through Kalindi Kunj.

"Acting on the tip-off, a team of special cell led by ACP Pradyuman laid a trap in the area. When the accused arrived there, police team asked him to stop but he opened fire on them. Police retaliated on that and arrested him," said Pramod Singh Kushwaha, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell.

Sahun, popularly known as Sahun Bishambhara, was the leader of Salli Sahun gang. He was carrying reward of

`5 lakh, including `2 lakh each from Delhi and Haryana police. Salli was already arrested by the police. He was the last member of the gang.

Police officials said the gang was active in highway robberies in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh (MP), Uttar Pradesh (UP), Maharashtra, Hyderabad and Telangana. Sahun was a truck driver and aware of all the highway routes. He used trucks for committing crimes.

"He targeted vehicles through trucks. He would park the truck before the vehicle to stop them. After committing crime, the trucks were used to escape. He never used mobile phones and always passed through the phones of other people. To call a meeting, he used tell the other person that we would meet him at the place where we had tea last year. In such a case, it became more difficult to nab him," said Kushwaha.

Police officials said the accused has escaped three times from police custody. He escaped two times, 2009 and 2011, from the custody of UP police. In 2015, Sahun along with his gang members escaped the custody of MP police from Nooh. The accused had fired six times on police during encounter.

"He is a very shrewd and dreaded criminal. He was involved in a MCOCA case in Delhi. We have been searching him for past two years. Around nine members of his gang have been arrested earlier. We are now looking for his other associates," added Kushwaha.
