In an attempt to boost the confidence of its workers before the upcoming municipal election, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday in his address said that the party will only provide tickets to those who work from streets not to the VIPs. He also appealed voters to bring changes by voting the Congress.
He attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for playing "politics of false promises" as he set the tone of his party's campaign for upcoming civic polls in the national Capital.
Addressing gathering at the Ramlila grounds in the national Capital, Gandhi targeted both Modi and Kejriwal for leading "individual-centric" Government. Accusing Prime Minister for branding himself, he said that the PM talks about startup and 'Make in India' but forget to provide jobs to youth he promised before election.
The campaign theme for the rally was "Bahane nahi, karenge vikas (no excuses, we will bring real development)" and "Anubhav hai hamare paas (we have the experience to deliver).
Though the local Congress leaders say that the rally was only for the party workers, political pundits said that it was an attempt by the party to boost the morale of its cadre at grassroots level for the civic polls.
"Modi ji talks about 56-inch chest, rightIJ When our youth are being killed...Why he is not speakingIJ Because India's Prime Minister is scared of speaking up (to the US)," Rahul said.
The city Congress leaders would also launch "padyatra (foot march)" across different wards from March 8. "For the MCD polls, we believe in low key door-to-door campaign," a senior leader said.
Delhi Congress leader Pratyush welcomed Congress vice-president’s statement that ticket will not be given to VIPs in municipal polls. This has sent a possitive message among purvanchalis that they will get fair share to contest the municipal elections, he added.
