Vehicle registration smoother, courtesy smart card RCs

Following the responsibility of issuing chip-based smart card Registration Certificate (RC) to Delhi Integrated Multi Model Transit System, the process of registration of vehicles has become smooth. The number of such registration has also increased manifold as people have been facing less hassle.

In the last four days, over 8,000 applications have been received by the DIMTS for RCs. Earlier a motorist had to pay Rs416 for the Smart Optical Card, while the DIMTS is charging only Rs200 for the same under the new set up. Of the Rs200, DIMTS will pay Rs60 to the Transport department.

DIMTS managing director SN Sahai told The Pioneer that total 2,471 RCs have been approved, printed and scanned since DIMTS took over on April 22. “Over 8,000 applications have been received by the 16 zonal offices of DIMTS for RCs. Once the system is in place, the delivery time will be less than three days. Under the time-bound delivery system, 30-day period has been fixed for delivery of RCs. Sahai said that the chip based smart card is based on NIC software of VAHAAN and it has 64 kb scosta compliant smart card,” said Sahai.

The main feature of the chip based smart card is that it meets all requirements laid down by Central Motor Vehicle Registration (Amended) Act 1989 and additional information can be captured in 64 kb microprocessor chip as per Delhi Motor Vehicle Registration (Amended) Act 1993.

The DMITS has recently taken over the job after the transport department terminated the contract of a private company which was issuing optical smart cards in October last year. With the smooth procedure of registration of vehicles, the consumers are also relieved. Ravish Kumar, who had applied for RC said that new system seems to be hassle free and cheaper. “Earlier, he had paid Rs416 for RC and new company is charging only Rs200,” said Kumar.
