Urban Arts panel holds back RTR flyover plan

The flyover proposed to be built parallel to the existing single carriageway Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Marg flyover, is getting entangled in unnecessary red-tape.

Even after receiving the requisite approvals from the lieutenant Governor, the Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC) refused to approve the construction of the upcoming flyover. DUAC will convene a meeting with the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (Uttipec) a fortnight later, to seek further clarifications on the new flyover.

In-principle approval to the flyover was granted after five years of deliberations, as a means to end traffic on RTR flyover. "DUAC has now sought further clarifications on traffic solutions it will provide to the extended area, apart from locals. Even though the agency appreciated the model of the upcoming flyover, it ventured beyond aesthetics and skyline by unnecessarily concerning itself with traffic solutions that it will provide. Holding another meeting two weeks later will only delay the process as various other clearances will be required; this is a never-ending process," a source present at the meeting on Wednesday rued. The l-G had granted an in-principle approval to the proposed three-lane flyover at the RTR Marg in April, this year.

According to the proposal, the new flyover, which will cater to the traffic from IIT to NH 8, will terminate near Niryat Bhawan. According to the Public Works Department (PWD), the proposal was planned in a manner that the service lanes alongside the flyover will not have to be acquired. This was the main contention for Vasant Vihar residents, who welcomed the proposal.
