A 13-year-old boy committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his house in northeast Delhi’s Welcome area on Tuesday night, according to police. He left a suicide note on mobile messaging app WhatsApp stating that he “did not want to live in the world where money was more important than people”, said police on Wednesday, adding that the boy appears to be disturbed after the separation of his parents.

The deceased identified as Swarnim alias Shanu had been living along with his elder brother Shikhar at their maternal grandparent house in Vaishali in Ghaziabad. Both had shifted to their aunt’s house in Welcome about a fortnight ago after Shikhar got his leg fractured.

“On Tuesday night both of them went to sleep at about midnight. later, when Shikhar woke up he found his brother hanging from the ceiling fan and raised an alarm,” said a police officer. Shanu was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. His body was handed over to the family after the autopsy.

Police said while the deceased mother works with a multinational company (MNC) in Dubai, his father works as a photographer in Shahdara area. The couple had separated nine years ago.

“Shanu and his brother were not happy with the development and had wanted their parents to stay together but as their mother wanted to earn more money she shifted to Dubai,” said the officer.  Police said they have confiscated deceased’s mobile phone and a laptop from the house to find out whether he left anything else in writing.

Also, police said if required his parents may be called in for questioning. A case under relevant sections has been registered at the Welcome police station.
