The next Delhi BJP chief is likely to be announced in a few days. According to party sources, the two top contenders are current Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay and Pawan Sharma.
Also, in the race are Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Goel, BJP’s MPs from Delhi Maheish Girri and Parvesh Verma (son of former Delhi CM Saheb Singh Verma).
Upadhyay has been under fire for massive debacle that BJP suffered in 2015 Delhi Assembly polls. If party chooses him for the second stint, it will be no less than a surprise, said sources, adding that Sharma, on the other hand, has been serving the party for years. In Bihar elections last year, Sharma was one of the five co-incharges in Amit Shah’s team.
“The new president will have to salvage the party’s image first of all. He faces the challenge to bring the party out of the massive 2015 Assembly polls’ defeat and ensure they win MCD polls, which are very crucial to party,” said a source. For the last seven years, BJP has been ruling the three civic corporations and the party is girding up for the municipal corporation poll that is to be held in 2017.
