A 31-year-old staffer of a cash van was shot at by two unidentified armed bike-borne assailants when they allegedly robbed the cash van at gun point and decamped with `19 lakh cash in Outer Delhi’s Begumpur area on Friday afternoon. The daylight robbery took place in the busy pocket-A of Rohini area when staffers in the van had gone to refill an ATM of Union Bank of India.

Initial investigation has revealed that insiders were involved in passing information to the robbers about the cash being carried.

Naveen, the staffer in the cash van, sustained one bullet injury and is undergoing treatment at the Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital where he is stated to be stable.

A senior police investigator said that the incident took place at around 2:15 pm in the Pocket-A area of the Rohini Sector 24. “The cash van had started from Karol Bagh area and was stacked with `25 lakh cash. The van was on its way to refill cash across various ATM Machines in the city. At around 2:15 pm, when the cash van reached Rohini Sector 24, two staffers got down from the van and were heading to the ATM of the Union Bank Of India when two armed bikers came and tried to snatch the cash bag,” said a senior officer.

“Naveen was holding the cash bag. One of the culprits opened fire at the staffers. Following which one bullet hit Naveen. On hearing gun shots, the security guard of the van who was seating inside the  van came out and retaliated. The robbers managed to escape from the spot.

After the bikers escaped, the staffers made a call to the Police Control Room after which the local police rushed to the spot and took the injured to the Ambedkar hospital.

Police said that they have registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC at the Begumpur police station. DCP Rishi Pal (Rohini) said, “Six special teams have been constituted for investigation and various clues are being worked upon.”

Another senior police officer added, “We are scanning the CCTV cameras along the route from where the cash van started. We are also questioning the staffers of the van.”
