'UNESCO' impostors in police cuffs

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police has arrested a conman and his female associate who had cheated several companies after posing as people associated with the UNESCO and the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The mastermind, Shubhendu Sorcar (40), had duped various people and companies to the tune of crores of rupees.

Joint Commissioner of Police (EOW) Praveer Ranjana said that Shubhendu Sorcar and his associate Debashree Chatterjee were arrested by the Anti-Forgery Section of the EOW on Sunday from a hotel in Jaipur. The two, in connivance with others, had cheated a number of gullible people in the past. Sorcar used to organise cultural events in major cities and invited politicians, film stars and popular singers in order to impress upon his targets. Shockingly, he even cheated the event organisers and never paid them.

The EOW had received a number of complaints regarding one Professor Sorcar running an organisation by the name of National Educational Research and Development (NERDP), which claims to be an International Post Secondary Non-Profit Statutory Education Agency in Higher Education, associated with international organisations. The EOW was also asked by the Union Government to investigate the antecedents of Sorcar who claimed that NERDP is an organisation supported by UNESCO and duly recognised by the Ministry of Human Resource Development for carrying out activities related to Higher Education in India, the Joint CP said.

During investigation, it was revealed that Sorcar used to run an office in Hauz Khas in order to project to his unsuspecting victims that his organisation -- NERDP -- is handling several big ticket assignments across India with the support of Ministry of HRD and UNESCO.
