Unclogging MG Road: 500 challans issued on Day 1

In its bid to decongest MG road from illegal parking and encroachments, Gurugram traffic police have launched a drive to prosecute the erring vehicles. Over 500 challans  were issued on the very first day. Besides challans, around 40 wrongly-parked vehicles were towed away by the traffic police. The drive was carried out between 10 am to 5 pm.  Senior police officers said that such intensive drive would continue for next 15 to 20 days.

The traffic decongestion plan of MG Road, is part of the joint action plan of  Gurugram Police, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and  Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA).

MCG officials  said that smart road means an encroachment-free road which has ‘zero tolerance for illegal parking’. Both sides of the 3.5 km long stretch of the road from Sikenderpur to Iffco Chowk will be made smart.

For long, shoppers and residents on MG road have been complaining about the lack of space to walk on the stretch that is usually occupied by roadside eateries and illegally parked vehicles.

“This anti-encroachment drive will continue for the next few more weeks. We are also planning to launch similar campaigns on another busy road in the city,” DCP traffic, Balbir Singh said.

“The drive will be continuing from Monday as Saturday and Sunday were counted as a holiday. So our drive will continue five days in a week,” he added.

During the drive the whole operation was covered on video so that the footage can be used as evidence against repeat offenders, a traffic cop said.

last week the MG Road was selected as the pilot road for anti-encroachment drives. In the meeting, several areas where encroachments are rampant were discussed.
