Unclaimed bags outside BJP HQ send cops into tizzy

Discovery of three unclaimed bags outside the BJP’s national office in New Delhi amid high-security sent the Delhi Police into a spin on Wednesday. They carried out anti-sabotage drill to ensure that nothing untoward takes place but it later turned out to be a false alarm as the three bags belonged to a couple from Chhatarpur in South Delhi who had come to meet senior BJP leaders. However, they have been put to joint interrogation by the police and agencies.

According to the police a PCR call was received about the bags around 7:40 am following which bomb and dog squads were rushed to the spot. However, investigators found nothing suspicious in the bags. Meanwhile, a couple identified as Sandhya Mangal Murthy and her husband Surjeet Narayan Goswami, residents of Chattarpur area in South Delhi reached the spot and said the bag belonged to them.

“The couple had kept the bag at the BJP headquarters and went off to the nearby Andhra Bhavan to get some food. Meanwhile, somebody made a PCR call about the unclaimed bags,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) SBS Tyagi.

Murthy originally hails from Seemandhra while her husband is from Uttaranchal. The two are postgraduates but are jobless; they were also thrown out of their rented house as they were unable to pay the rent. They had reached the BJP headquarters around 7:15 am for redressal of their grievances and wanted to meet somebody for a job.

Both of them were taken to the Parliament Street Police Station and a joint interrogation was carried but nothing suspicious was found. Police also verified their antecedents. The couple was allowed to go after they were found clean after a through investigation, police said.

As the incident took place hours before a crucial Parliamentary Board meeting of the BJP where Amit Shah was appointed as its new president, security agencies were concerned, said a police official.
