After having the portraits of India’s highest gallantry award Param Veer Chakra- decorated soldiers displayed on their walls, the Universities across the country will now have to organise different programmes in order to generate awareness about the supreme sacrifice and valour of our armed forces, among the youth. In the initiative ahead of Armed Forces Flag Day on December 7, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued directives to all universities for the same.
The UGC’s letter to the universities said, “Armed Forces Flag Day is observed every year on December 7 to commemorate the supreme sacrifices made by our valiant Armed Forces personnel for protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country.”
“The universities are requested to arrange functions/talks for students in their colleges or institutes to generate awareness among the youth about the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces and the significance of the day in our lives,” stated the letter.
Since last couple of years, especially after the JNU row in which “anti-national” slogans were allegedly raised, there has been a consistent effort on the part of Government and its agencies to sensitise the youth about the supreme sacrifices made by our valiant soldiers. Also, the JNU Vice-Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar proposition of installing a battle tank in the campus, which he made few months before is seen in the same light by many.
