Udit Raj claims key scalps in NW Delhi

Published on:

As the BJP candidate Udit Raj from lone reserved lok Sabha seat in the Capital made considerable headway, his rivals — Congress candidate Krishna Tirath and Aam Aadmi Party leader Rakhi Birla — left the counting centre after two rounds of counting in haste.

The move indicated they had conceded defeat. While making a quick departure, former Union Minister Tirath put the onus of her poor performance on the party. Tirath said the party should be blamed for her defeat, not her. Birla, however, also left the counting centre earlier than Tirath anticipating her defeat. She refused to give comment on the polls results. As the result was declared on Friday evening, Birla stood second in the electoral race in North-West Delhi seat. Raj defeated former Social Welfare Minister in the Delhi Government by a margin of 1.6 lakh votes. Two-time Member of Parliament (MP) and Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Krishna Tirath, secured third position.
