A Delhi court on Tuesday sent two persons who in a video, which went viral on social media last week, had alleged to attack on Umar Khalid, a former student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in front of the Constitution Club, to two-day police custody. A police officials tasked with the probe said they are verifying the movements of the two accused and who they were touch with before the alleged attack.

The police have arrested two men, identified as Darwesh Shahpur and Naveen Dalal, on Monday from Fatehabad in Haryana. As probe is still going on Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat allowed the plea of the Delhi Police after it said their custodial interrogation was required.

“They had planned to disrupt the event 'Khauff se Azaadi' (Freedom from Fear) that was being held at the Constitution Club on August 13 afternoon and for which there was no permission or notification given by organizers to Delhi police,” said a police official.

“When Naveen reached the Constitution Club, he saw Khalid outside the venue and attacked him. Naveen said that he did not fire from the weapon he was carrying and it fell down while he was fleeing the spot,” said a police official.

“After the attack the duo fled separately. Our investigation is still going on. We are interrogating them as Khalid has alleged that one of them has pointed weapon towards him,” said a senior police official.

In video which is uploaded on Facebook the duo are claiming that the attack to be a gift of Independence Day to citizens of the country. Shahpur is seen saying in the video they both requested the police to not trouble anyone and they will surrender at the home and village of Sikh revolutionary Kartar Singh Sarabha on August 17.

The Delhi Police had handed over the case to its Special Cell, which incidentally is already probing a sedition case against Khalid and two other JNU students. A case of attempt to murder was registered by the police in connection with the incident.
