Two South African women have been arrested by anti-narcotics sleuths for allegedly smuggling 78 kg of popular party drugs from the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
Bulayi Nthabiseng Josephin (42) and Mkhaliphe Grace Bongiw (41) were intercepted by CISF personnel late on Saturday as they were scheduled to travel to Nairobi.
Josephin’s activities were found to be suspicious, according to security officials.
41 kg of pseudo-ephidrine was recovered from her bag. Another cache of 37 kg of the same drug was recovered from Bongiw, said a CISF officer. Both the women were on a tourist visa to India and had arrived Delhi on July 17.
In another catch, three persons, including a woman and two Nigerian nationals were arrested for smuggling cocaine to western countries through courier agencies. About 0.940 kg cocaine worth Rs 1 crore was seized.
The seized drugs are sedatives and hypnotic substances which are commonly used in rave parties. One Vashist Kumar, who runs a courier agency in Rajendra Place, reported that a lady named Pooja Ray, resident of Mahavir Nagar, had on several occasions sent couriers to countries such as Holland, Australia, Netherlands and liberia. The delivery of her last parcel, which contained fancy laces and spiral bands, was to be dispatched on July 12, but was delayed due to documentation issues. Pooja made repeated telephone enquiries and displayed extreme anxiety over delay in delivery. Kumar got suspicious and reported the matter to the police.
Initial investigations revealed that all the addresses of the alleged people were fake and there was no clue of the lady, who deposited the parcels. Technical surveillance was undertaken and informers were deployed.
This led to the arrest of three people, identified as Tsering Choezom (30) who impersonated herself as Pooja Ray, Isika Collins (27) and Omenoys Favor (27). 640 gm of Methaqualone was seized from the courier box, and 100 gm of the same drug has been seized from each of the accused.
The police also stopped a parcel which was sent by the accused to Netherlands. The parcel which was on its way has been stopped at Paris and efforts are being made to get its custody.
