In a major narcotics haul, 115 kgs of pseudo-ephedrine - a party drug - was recovered from two middle-aged men from Mizoram who have now been placed under arrest.
The drugs recovered are valued around Rs 1.2 crore, police said. lianthuama Chhakchhuak (48) and Sawithanga (53), hailing from lunglei district in the northeastern State, were apprehended from IGI airport on Monday night, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said.
They were carrying 115 kg of contraband in four bags, he said. CISF spokesperson Hemendra Singh said the duo was intercepted by a CISF check squad when they arrived at the airport to board a flight to Guwahati.
“They said they were in furniture business. It came to light that they were carriers and would get Rs 1 lakh for delivering the drugs,” he said.
“They had come to Delhi two weeks ago to receive the consignment and deliver it in Mizoram,” Yadav added. Chhakchhuak, a welder by profession, told police that he entered the drug trade as his income was not adequate, the official claimed. He allegedly came in contact with one Robert Mafsawma, who offered him money for bringing contrabands from Delhi. Sawithanga, a carpenter by profession, is a relative of Chhakchhuak. “Police are coordinating with the Mizoram police in order to get some help in this issue. This is the third such case of drug trafficking in the capital and second in March alone,” the official said.
