Two men have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a 12-year-old boy from North-East Delhi’s Welcome area who was later released by them in lieu of Rs25 lakh as ransom.
The Class IX student was abducted on Friday and had returned home on Sunday with the family claiming that he came back on his own. However, police, who had sent nine teams to rescue the child, decided to bring it to a logical end.
During investigation it was found that the boy was kidnapped by three men who later released him after receiving ransom. Further investigation was conducted and following a tip-off, two of the accused, identified as Sher Mohd, alias Sheru (30) and Tariq, alias Mamu (34) were arrested and Rs12.24 lakh were recovered from the two. One accused Azim, alias Raja is yet to be arrested in this case.
While Sher Mohd was arrested from Kabir Nagar, Tariq was apprehended from Batla House. A mobile phone bearing voice recording of the victim was also recovered from him.
“The reason why all these efforts were made even after safe return of the boy was because we decided that if someone was behind the incident, then he should be brought to book so that no recurrence of this kind takes place in the area,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) RA Sanjeev.
Sher Mohd had worked for Mohd Asif, the father of kidnapped child some months ago. He knew that Asif has a business in Gandhinagar and he was financially very sound, police said.
“Around 20 days back, Sher Mohd met Tariq and the duo planned to kidnap Asif’s son for ransom and carefully monitored his movements for some days. They also roped in Azim in their grand design,” said Sanjeev.
