Two Govt officials' gold chains snatched in 4 days

Cocking a snook at Delhi Police, an enterprising gang of thieves have robbed a gold chain from an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) official from the busy Connaught Place area.

The lady IFS officer was taking an evening stroll after shopping when two unidentified snatchers astride a motorcycle sped away with her chain. Within some time of her making a complaint call, all hell broke loose in New Delhi district on June 15, though the matter was kept under wraps.

If that was not enough, three persons have also managed to snatch a gold chain of an assistant director posted with the Intelligence Bureau (IB), on Tuesday. Both cases are yet to be worked out.

A senior police officer said, “The incident was reported on Saturday evening, when the victim was returning from l-block market in CP. The motorbike’s make and registration could not be noted.”

Police sources said some policemen were deputed near the area to check the increasing number of snatchings. A case has been registered at Connaught Place Police Station.

In the second incident, IB assistant director Ravi Shankar Sharma (58), who lives with his family in Sector12, RK Puram, was taking a morning walk in a service lane near Ring Road when three persons on two scooters snatched his gold chain. “It was around 5.30 am on Tuesday when the assailants waylaid him. They were rough and pushed Sharma down,” the officer added.

According to Delhi Police statistics, 684 cases of snatching were registered this year till April 30, while 394 cases were reported in 2012 — an increase of 73 per cent. Out of the 684 cases this year, 38 per cent took place from 12 noon to 4 pm, while 30 per cent were reported in the next four hours.
