Two boatmen dive into Yamuna to save woman who takes a death plunge

A woman, who tried to commit suicide by jumping off Geeta Colony flyover into the river Yamuna, was saved by two divers who were on patrol to remove the scaffold of idols on Saturday.

The two divers, identified as Imran Khan (24) and Naheem Khan (26), acted swiftly and saved the woman’s life. The woman, a 40-year-old is a resident of East Delhi. Around eight similar suicide cases have taken place previously this year.

“Imran and Naheem were in Yamuna collecting the straw and clay scaffolds following the immersion of Durga idols on Saturday when they saw a woman jumping off the flyover,” said Boat Club in-charge Harish Kumar. It was around 1 pm when they saw a woman jumping off the Geeta Colony flyover into the river. “They jumped into the water, swam towards her, grabbed her by her hair and pulled her to the boat,” he added. Naheem meanwhile dialled 100 and the PCR van reached the area. She was then taken to a hospital. “She is doing fine and is in perfectly good health,” Harish said.

“It was a huge task. It sounds easy to save a life, but it is a tough job. Imran and Naheem were quite prompt as their response time was quick. Even two three minutes in the water in such cases mean the difference between life and death,” said Kunal, District Magistrate (East district). These divers play a vital role in saving lives of many who attempt suicide or fall into the river by accident.
