Turned away, woman gives birth at the gates of GTB

In a case of callous negligence, a pregnant woman delivered a baby outside Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital after being turned away by the doctors at the hospital. The woman, identified as Rita, was asked by the doctors to get an ultrasound test done from outside as the waiting period for the test at the hospital was over three months.

Rita delivered a baby girl on Sunday at the gates of the hospital. “They asked us to take her outside after we tried to admit her. We said she is not in a condition to be taken out but they insisted that we take her to some other place for ultrasound. We said that all the diagnostic centres are closed and we could not possibly take her anywhere. We requested that there was no time and she would deliver any moment. They did not listen to us and she delivered the baby outside the hospital,” said a relative of the woman. Following police intervention, the woman is now admitted in the hospital.

However, the hospital authorities remained unrepentant and refused to comment on the incident. On trying to contact the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr BK Jain, no comments were received.
