The trifurcation of the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi has resulted in unprecedented property tax collection. All the three civic bodies in the Capital have shown a tremendous increase in tax collection.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) crossed its budget target of Rs133.6 crore and settled at nearly Rs140 crore for the financial year 2012-13.

The tax collection last year was merely Rs69.5 crore. With almost an increase of 100 per cent, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation's (NDMC) tax collection increased from Rs182 crore in the year 2011-12 to more than Rs326 crore in 2012-13. Also, the amount collected from conversion charges has gone up to Rs105 crore in 2012-13 from Rs50 crore during the previous year. Conversion charge collection for EDMC has also increased to Rs62.4 crore from Rs30.1 crore in the last year.

Similarly, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has also achieved its revenue target. “The property tax department collected Rs604 crore as against the fixed target of Rs581 crore,” said Subhash Arya, leader of House, SDMC.

The number of tax payers in all three corporations has also witnessed a steady rise. In the North Corporation, the number of tax payers rose from around 3.3 lakh in 2011-12 to 3.8 lakh in the year 2012-13. On the other hand, EDMC

recorded an increase from 2 lakh to nearly 2.5 lakh.
