Repeat traffic violators will now have to pay more as the traffic police will now conduct the trials of e-challan in north, east and west Delhi after south and central districts. Expected to be operational by the month-end, the system will ensure better enforcement and prosecutions of the commercial vehicles and may also invoke suspension and cancellation of permits in case of repeat offenders. The system will replace the manual system of issuing traffic challans and the challans will now be issued through a handheld device and the data will be fed to a central server.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Anil Shikla said, “Trials will be conducted in other parts of the city shortly. At present, the traffic police have 250 handheld devices to issue challans. Around 550 challans are issued using these handheld computers fitted with a camera and a printer daily. During this soft launch, we are trying to plug-in the inadequacies occurring in the system.”
The e-challan system will be fully operational once traffic police gets the delivery of 1,200 devices by the end of the month.
