Trash threatens health: Doctors

The tonnes of garbage  dumped openly on the streets of national Capital can pose serious threat to the health of residents. According to city doctors, the open exposure of waste can cause serious water-borne diseases, increase bacterial infection leading to breathing ailments.

Doctors said if the garbage is not disposed properly, there can be a situation of epidemic. Health officials are of the view that decaying household waste items like rotten vegetables, fruits and meat items may give rise to water-borne diseases like typhoid, jaundice, and diarrhoea.

Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya’s director, Dr Anoop Mohta said, “Children, who have weaker immunity, are at a higher risk of infection. Decaying garbage increases mosquitoes and flies making situation grimmer.”

People in the national Capital are forced to breathe in the pungent smell of the garbage. Almost all markets, residential areas and slums have the same picture. While entire Delhi smells bad, areas like Geeta Colony, Seelampur, Patparganj, laxmi Nagar, and Yamuna Vihar are badly hit.

“We cannot walk outside. It smells so bad. My house is stinking so bad,” said Sujata, a resident of laxmi Nagar.
