In order to upgrade infrastructure for visitors at the Transport Department offices, the Delhi Government has directed air-conditioned waiting lounges be constructed at all 14 zonal offices.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has also directed revamp and better maintenance of the bus shelters that are in dilapidated state.

The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 7 crore and the modernisation work will be carried out by Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMTS) and Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC). A total of 1,725 bus shelters have been identified without proper lighting arrangements and display boards have been broken. According to plan, DIMTS will refurbish the bus shelters, which do not have proper lighting arrangements and needs urgent maintenance.

There will be a 24×7 food court at all the 14 zonal offices. To enhance security arrangements, the zonal offices will be installed with metal detectors and CCTV cameras.

“The other facilities include RO water purification system, installation of a sewage treatment plant and lCD-lED screens at the spacious waiting lounges,” said an official.

Currently, all the zonal offices of the Transport Department are in a shambles due to lack of proper maintenance. Sources said that the plan is to bring down the old structure and replace it with swanky new stainless steel bus shelters similar to those in other parts of the city.

The shelters, coming up at a cost of about Rs 10 lakh each, will have provision for large advertising boards with proper display of lights. The barricades of all the bus shelters will be revamped. At present, the State Transport Department has identified around 150 bus shelters without steel barricades.
