In a move aimed at easing traffic congestion and enhancing commuter safety, the Delhi Traffic Police is planning to redesign the MRV cut, a well-known traffic choke point in Dwarka, officials said on Wednesday.
The cut, located near Azad Hind Fauj Marg and named after the nearby MRV School, connects commuters travelling from the ISKCON temple side towards Sector 3 and Matiala village. Currently, the layout of the cut causes vehicles from opposite directions to directly face each other, creating frequent bottlenecks and posing a serious risk of accidents.
On March 12, the Traffic Inspector of Dwarka Traffic Circle formally wrote to the Public Works Department (PWD), recommending the closure of the existing cut for certain directions of travel and proposing the construction of dividers on both sides of the road to streamline movement.
The letter also suggested providing separate entry and exit points for vehicles on either side to prevent direct confrontation of traffic.
A rough drawing for reference has been submitted along with the letter, and the Traffic Inspector has expressed willingness to support further planning and meetings on the matter.
Speaking about the project, a senior traffic police official said, “The cut is built in such a way that commuters coming from opposite directions come in front of one another, which is very prone to accidents. There is a high need to build a divider on both sides to avoid accidents in the area.”
Following the request from the traffic police, PWD officials, along with representatives from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), conducted a joint site survey to assess the feasibility of the proposed changes.
The road widening, if undertaken, would further reduce congestion during peak hours, improving overall commute time for thousands of residents in sectors 3, 13, and Matiala village, officials said.
In a related development, the Traffic Police has also recommended similar interventions at the Surya Cut, located after the Palam Flyover.
As per the officials, the area, known locally due to the Surya banquet hall, serves as a key route for vehicles diverting towards Shri Niketan CGHS and Matiala village via a service road.
However, the cut currently faces severe limitations due to its narrow width and unmanaged traffic movement. Moreover, unused land owned by DDA adjacent to the cut has been reduced to a dumping ground, worsening the condition of the junction.
In a letter dated March 25, the Dwarka Traffic Circle requested the Executive Engineer of PWD to widen the Surya Cut using the unused land and to create separate entry points on the service lane, which would include a height restriction barrier for better traffic management.
The proposal emphasises that such structural changes could improve safety, reduce congestion, and eliminate the chaotic merging of vehicles at the cut.
Officials said that both projects, at MRV and Surya cuts, will not only improve traffic discipline but also prevent accidents and improve quality of life for local residents.
