In what seems to be an attempt to tarnish the image of Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma, a fake Twitter account in his name has allegedly been created. The Twitter handle carried the photo of the Delhi Police chief. An FIR has been registered with the Delhi Police and investigation has been taken up.

Meanwhile, the fake Twitter handle was deleted late on Thursday evening.

A senior police official, who did not want to be named, said, “The tweets and retweets made through the fake Twitter handle are of such a nature that they are causing harm to the image and reputation of the Delhi Police Commissioner and also of the Delhi Police as an organisation.”

The complainant, who is a part of the Delhi Police’s social media cell lodged a complaint on Wednesday, alleging that while going through the social networking site, he came across a Twitter handle with the name @AlokVermaCPDP, wherein the display name of the account is Alok Verma.

“Since the verified Twitter account of CP Delhi is @CPDelhi, and the alleged fake Twitter account is of the name @AlokVermaCPDP, so I decided to check the Twitter handle. On checking the account, it was found that the Twitter handle @AlokVermaCPDP was in the name of Alok Verma and the profile was having a profile picture of current Commissioner of Delhi Police in uniform and was impersonating as Alok Kumar Verma, Commissioner of Police, Delhi,” the complainant alleged.

The complainant further said the account has been used to make tweets and retweets of harmful nature that are ruining the image and reputation of the Delhi Police Commissioner and the Delhi Police force.

Apart from this the complainant further alleged that, “the fake Twitter handle appears to have been created to mislead and misguide the general public. Some unknown person has used the name and photograph in uniform of Alok Verma with intent to damage and harm the reputation of the Commissioner of Police as well as the department and also to mislead the public in general.”

After receiving the complaint, police registered an FIR under Section 469 IPC and Information Technology Act, 2000. “We have registered an FIR on the complaint and further investigations are on,” said the police official.
