In its bid to rein in rash drivers, Delhi Traffic Police on Tuesday added 11 high tech interceptors. These interceptors are equipped to move quickly and can function in all weather conditions, and can record speed even if it is dark. Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik flagged off these high-tech interceptors vans in Traffic Police fleet to add more teeth to its anti-rash driving paraphernalia.
“The 11 new interceptors have the capacity to track over-speeding vehicles through laser-based cameras. Cameras can work in all light conditions and produce a photograph of the over-speeding vehicles’ registration number and its GPS coordinates” said Garima Bhatnagar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
“These interceptors have a laser based gun which can capture high speeding automobiles, ranging from two-wheelers to big ones covering from a distance of 25 metres to 1.5 km. Once a vehicle gets caught the camera will automatically takes the image and also take a video of up to two seconds for fulfilling the requirement of court evidences,” she added.
The main feature of these interceptors is that they can take up to eight images and shoot up to 4 videos. Talking about these vehicles fitted according to BS-IV emission standards, these interceptors will operate in the night. Delhi Traffic Police through this initiative intend to increase the number of challans and also bring down road accidents. Around 52,000 challans have been issued for over-speeding this year.
The high speed interceptors were flagged off at the India Gate lawns. Inaugurating the technology, Delhi Police Commissione Amulaya Patnaik shared that with introduction of the new system, it will add teeth to technology based prosecution. The laser-based cameras fitted in these vehicles can generate a challan in two seconds and identify a speeding vehicle in a lane full of vehicles. They can work in all light conditions and produce a photograph of the speeding vehicles registration number plate with its GPS coordinates, time and place.
