Tihar's graying prisoners get a new ward

Published on:

Asia’s largest jail Tihar on Tuesday added a new ward to house senior inmates. The ward was commissioned by the Director General (DG) Prisons Alok Verma. The ward was specially created for senior and elderly prisoners in Jail no. 3, which also houses the Tihar hospital, to address health

concerns of these inmates. The prisoners can be transported to the jail hospital immediately in case there is a medical emergency. Jail no. 3 has both convicts and undertrials. The young prisoners lodged in this jail will be given the responsibility of assisting senior prisoners and also take care of them.

The senior inmates have many age-related issues and it is difficult for them to travel from different part of the vastly spread jail complex to the hospital. Hence, a special ward has been made here to shift the elderly, the Delhi Prisons spokesperson and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mukesh Prasad said.  Having a separate ward for the elderly inside the Tihar Jails also aims at keeping all the senior inmates together.
